The singles round-up I wrote a couple of months ago was so popular, I thought I’d do another one. So here it is. Pop music, let’s go!

‘Parallel Worlds’ by Elliot Minor (Repossession Records, released 2 April) is a confusing proposition. The sleeve features baroque, Smashing Pumpkins-type graphics, and a photo of the band sporting wedding suits and sulky expressions. And yet, we’re informed they recently supported McFly, and the ‘80s punk-pop of ‘Parallel Worlds’ sounds like none other than Busted. Is this a boy band? If it is, it’s a very unusual-looking one. But it’s by no means terrible. 6/10

The mixed signals continue with Glasweigan outfit Le Reno Amps and their single ‘Poison Letter’ (Pet Pirahna/Armellodie, 11 June). Variously described as blues, alt-country and punk, and compared to Violent Femmes and the Decemberists, the title track features bouncy harmonies and blaring horns which… err… oh, it’s no use hiding it, this is BRITPOP. Britpop, Britpop, Britpop. Again, this is not necessarily a bad thing, but a little honesty would be helpful. I find modern music confusing enough as it is. 6/10

By way of contrast, ‘I Am John’ by Lonely, Dear (Regal, release date UNKNOWN) arrived with no supporting information at all, so I wasted a good half hour poking it suspiciously and sniffing it in the hope of finding clues. None were forthcoming, so I listened to the song and discovered it to be a quite charming blast of lo-fi indie pop, complete with female backing vocals and glockenspiel, which cheered me up no end. 9/10

That’s your lot. See you in hell!
