| “Singles round-up”! No, it’s not some new government initiative whereby the country’s loveless are rounded up and forced to copulate at gunpoint, under the watchful glare of Trinny and Susannah (although surely that can’t be far off). Rather, it’s a brilliant new occasional series in which we desperately attempt to clear the backlog of single releases that periodically accumulates at Tiny Towers, in order to make more room for our ill-considered eBay purchases. |

First up, ‘Ghosts/Left Foot Right Foot’ by The:Hair (Cool For Cats, out 12 March). I’m afraid that colon isn’t a typo, it’s part of the band name. Anyway, everyone seems to be describing The:Hair as “punk/funk”, and I’m not one to fly in the face of orthodoxy, least not when it rhymes. ‘Ghosts’ sounds the part, a jerky, toe-tapping affair, but ‘Left Foot Right Foot’, is a bit tedious, like Jet or something. On balance, I give the single a respectable 6/10.
Next, the excellently titled ‘Aw Mum They Made Me Read’ by Telley (Hitback, 5 March). Wouldn’t you know, it’s an EP. Telley make spiky, keyboard-augmented indie pop, vaguely in the mould of Ooberman or Bearsuit, if anyone knows what I’m talking about. It’s all very quirky but also a bit of a chore, like some people can be. The drummer doesn’t wear shoes. It can have 6/10 as well.
And finally tonight, ‘Alone In The Makeout Room’ by the Broken Family Band (Track and Field, 5 March) - “featuring”, if you will, Ms Eddi Reader. It’s an old-school country duet featuring a pair of bitter ex-lovers wishing a variety of nasty fates on one another, before demanding “Why did you leave me alone in the makeout room?”. Hey, we’ve all been there. An enjoyable slice of faux-Americana with a witty lyric, I award it 7/10. (The Sun and the Mirror both gave them good reviews, apparently, so they probably couldn’t give a shit).
And that’s March dealt with. So long, suckers! |

I think they're supposed to be. This isn't how all reviews are going to be from now on, or anything. Like Mat said, it'll just be every now and then to get through some cds that would otherwise probably end up being ignored completely.

Perhaps if there is enough demand for a more full review of something that has been summarised here, it could be done?
