Is science “golden”? Let’s weigh up the evidence. On the one hand, it’s given us friendly bacteria, an unimaginable array of hair-glossening technologies, and MP3s. On the other, it’s given us nuclear weapons and the constant bother that is gravity. All things considered, in my capacity as a writer for a small music webzine, I’m declaring it a draw: without science, things would be no better or worse than they are currently. Glad we got that sorted out.

All of which has nothing to do with the Grates. For the uninitiated, the Grates are an Australasian three-piece, who first came to this writer’s attention while featuring on a bill also comprising The Go! Team and Smoosh, and managed to impress the crowd with their jaunty pop-punk and rather excitable lead singer.

But does it work away from the thrilling environment of the live gig-style concert? Sort of. It certainly captures the enjoyable bluster of the performance but, somehow, on a late autumn evening spent in my flat, it ultimately seems rather directionless and futile, as so many things do. I have had a couple of glasses of wine, though, so my judgment may be clouded.
