| Is science “golden”? Let’s weigh up the evidence. On the one hand, it’s given us friendly bacteria, an unimaginable array of hair-glossening technologies, and MP3s. On the other, it’s given us nuclear weapons and the constant bother that is gravity. All things considered, in my capacity as a writer for a small music webzine, I’m declaring it a draw: without science, things would be no better or worse than they are currently. Glad we got that sorted out. |

All of which has nothing to do with the Grates. For the uninitiated, the Grates are an Australasian three-piece, who first came to this writer’s attention while featuring on a bill also comprising The Go! Team and Smoosh, and managed to impress the crowd with their jaunty pop-punk and rather excitable lead singer.
But does it work away from the thrilling environment of the live gig-style concert? Sort of. It certainly captures the enjoyable bluster of the performance but, somehow, on a late autumn evening spent in my flat, it ultimately seems rather directionless and futile, as so many things do. I have had a couple of glasses of wine, though, so my judgment may be clouded. |
