So, I’d been listening to this record and trying to work out who it is that the Modern remind me of. The Human League? Maybe. Fischerspooner? Yes, a little bit.
Then it hit me: ‘Industry’ sounds almost exactly like something by long-forgotten late-nineties novelty act Younger Younger 28s. Well, up until the chorus, that is, when some noisy guitars kick in and it starts to sound a bit like the kind of ham-fisted goth racket that invariably does quite well in continental Europe.
I’m assuming anybody reading this article will have lost interest by now and most likely hopped off to some other corner of the internet to check out their eBay bids, stock market performance and/or “hot or not” scores; so instead of attempting a pithy conclusion I’ll round things off by directly quoting the Modern’s mission statement (with apologies for the traditional wonky syntax): “We want to combine the electroclash, synth pop, edgy guitar image and production values with pop songs that people latch onto.”
