| For my money, the Pipettes’ debut ‘Dirty Mind’ was the finest single of last year. Not only that, they are also solely responsible for the current ascendance in fashionable circles of the polka dot, or so it says here. Impressive achievements, both. |

For those of you who are not as conversant as TinyVoices with the cutting edge of alternative music and fashion textiles, the Pipettes are a kind of up-to-date take on ‘60s-style Spectoresque girl-group pop. Like its predecessor, ‘Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me’ is instantly catchy, slightly reminiscent of Kenickie at their finest - that was a compliment, by the way - and will either make you very happy or incandescent with rage, depending on where your partisan loyalties lie on this kind of a thing (mine, naturally, are in the former category). Great stuff.
B-sides include an orchestral reworking of the title track and acoustic versions of ‘Dirty Mind’ and another song, all of which sounds fantastic but none of which is included here. As luck would have it, though, the record comes out on my birthday, just in case anybody’s stuck for a present.
Nice band logo there, too! |
