X is Loaded / I Am The Door
- 'Momentum Fails / Our Own Radio'
(Sugar Shack)
|

|
| The name X Is Loaded vaguely rang a bell, but I couldn’t for the life of me remember where from. Fortunately, in lieu of a functioning long-term memory I have TinyVoices’ excellent search facility, and, lo!, it turns out our paths have crossed a couple of years before, in the Camden Barfly to be exact. |

At the time, I brilliantly described their “sound” as “early- to mid-‘90s, pre-emo… pop-rock meanderings”, and compared them to Therapy?. Well, X must have taken this incisive criticism to heart, as they haven’t released any records since. But now they’re back (back! BACK!) with ‘Momentum Falls’, which sounds rather like an attempt to get with the programme. In other words, there’s a fair whiff of Biffy. Unfortunately, it’s all a bit pointless: full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Fortunately (and rather quaintly), this is a split single, and it redeems itself somewhat with double-A-side ‘Our Own Radio’ by I Am The Door. Another dreadful band name, yes, but they at least manage a proper tune, and a chorus about radios (“turn up the volume so you can hear our sounds”), so they’re onto a winner. |
