| This is the worst song that has ever been released. |

If it wasn’t so bad it’d be laughable. If Richard Ashcroft hadn’t been part of the Verve then I might be able to put him alongside Daz Sampson in my cult heroes releasing appalling songs with such enthusiasm and belief when they’re really far far too old.
I suppose I should say I’m biased. The Verve were more or less my very first musical love. A Northern Soul is still one of the best records I’ve ever heard. It’s always something of a stab in the back when Ashcroft decides the world could really benefit from his genius again. He used to be empassioned, iconic, whatever, he just used to be good.
It’s hard to say what’s wrong with this song. Well, it’s hard to say specifically. Everything is just dire. And it’s all delivered with such conviction that “this is important”. It actually just makes me angry to hear Ashcroft destroying his own legacy.
I can’t stand back and be objective. It might be bad form as a reviewer, but I can’t. This is that bad. Anyone who thinks otherwise is as deluded as Richard Ashcroft seems to be, and I’ll personally beat it into them until they realise it. |
