Ensemble (featuring Cat Power)
- 'Disown, Delete'
(Fatcat)

| The man behind Ensemble, Olivier Alary, has forged some impressive connections in the musical world. He has previously worked with Bjork and on ‘Disown, Delete’, he brings in guest vocalist Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power. |

Her slightly husky voice adds richness to the track, which gets off to a slow start with a sparse, lingering instrumental section. Indeed, at just over six minutes, the whole song feels as though it is taking its time a little too much. Obviously, Ensemble is not in the business of making catchy pop songs, but a track of this length needs to offer something impressive to hold the listener’s attention - not just to sit back and rely on famous friends.
However, it is broadly successful at plying its particular brand of melancholic experimentalism, and builds in impact as it goes on, with the wistful, folky vocal nicely complemented by a delicate guitar part and some echoey synth. The overall effect is pleasantly spaced-out and melodic. Just don’t expect it to get stuck in your head. |
