| This self-titled debut from New Zealand four-piece Goldenhorse is full of sweet and inoffensive airplay-friendly tracks. |

Single ‘Run Run Run’ is bright, breezy and very easy on the ear. The vocals are very pretty, and the rhythm, appropriately enough, recalls a galloping horse - which keeps it, if not energetic, at least chirpy-sounding.
While this may not seem like high praise, sadly ‘Run Run Run’ is as good as it gets, and the album goes distinctly downhill from there. From the cheesy twangy guitar on ‘Wake Up Brother’ to the faux-Indian solo in ‘Spice Islands’, there are an awful lot of cringe-worthy moments on Goldenhorse, but mainly it’s just downright insipid.
Unadventurous guitar parts like the opening of ‘Maybe Tomorrow’ sound a little like Travis, while the sugary vocals begin to cloy after a few songs. The drippy string-drenched chorus of ‘Golden Dawn’ would be best used to accompany some kind of falling-in-love montage with flowers and slow-motion running.
The darker-sounding ‘Riverhead’ with its addition of the husky male singer and some spooky backing vocals on ‘Cool Pants’ provide some moments of welcome relief from the overall tone, but it’s not enough to lift the album out of blandness. I was left feeling like I needed to go listen to the heaviest thing I could find. Anything to wash that sweet taste out of my mouth. |

It's not a "debut" album; wake up sister! (he he). It's a compilation of Goldenhorses two previous albums "Riverhead" and "Out of The Moon", both of which went platinum in NZ (Riverhead 3X platinum). I'm not even from NZ and I know that! Been following the bands music for years now. Great to see them rocking UK and Germany. As for sweet, what's wrong with sweet? Go Kirsten!!!!
Favourite tracks "Out of the Moon" and "Fish".
All the best. G
