The Loves are a band with a clear mission statement - to recreate what they evidently see as a golden bygone age of pop.

From the bouncy early rock ‘n’ roll guitar of ‘I My She Love You’ to the Beach Boys-style backing vocals on ‘How Does It Feel To Be Loved?’, Technicolour is full of moments of startling deja-vu. This approach is always going to be a delicate balancing act between songs so classic you can’t believe they weren’t written years ago and a bored sense of heard-it-all-before, but, for the most part, The Loves manage to stay on the right side of the line. Besides, with such summery guitars and bubble-gum pop keyboards, it seems downright curmudgeonly to grouch on about whether or not they have anything original to say about the music they so gleefully ape.

The best of the bunch is ‘Xs and Os’, a sun-drenched slice of poppy fun, designed to charm a smile onto your face, while the sing-along, multi-instrumental chorus of ‘(Gimme Gimme) The Good Times’ has a hint of The Polyphonic Spree about it.

It’s this bright and catchy mood that is the album’s strength and the attempts at slower and more wistful tracks like ‘The Rainbow Connection’ fall rather flat by comparison. There are also moments where it does veer off into cheesiness - I , for one, could have done without the Jools Holland Piano at the end of ‘So Sad’.

But, if the overall shape has a few holes in it, Technicolour still offers retro appeal and bucket-loads of fizzy fun.

It is a very good album, even if it's a bit unequal !
