| Fall Out Boy is the kind of band name you expect to see emblazoned across the back of many a black hoodie by the time the Reading Festival comes around this year. Label it what you will (emo/college punk/post hardcore/whatever), but the standard industry approach seems to be to pair bands like this with that familiar youthful demographic yet to ‘find themselves’ musically. Come on, admit it. Half the people you know adored Blink 182 at some point in their lives, only to regret it later on. There is something very odd about this. |

Why do we get to a certain point and suddenly become embarrassed about the things we used to swear allegiance to? For a long time, I wouldn’t dare mention the fact that my very first gig was a Stereophonics one. But you know what, I’ve got to a stage in my life where I can stand tall and announce, proudly, that Word Gets Around is actually a fucking good album. Maybe I’m too old now to make such bold statements (I’m no longer a teen, after all), but I actually quite like this Fall Out Boy song.
There is a good chance you will have already heard ‘Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down’, as it was previously released last August. Sure, Patrick Stump’s vocals can grate a bit at times, and the general formula here is nothing we haven’t heard before, but the chorus is too catchy for a cynical fool like me to ignore. I’m not exactly converted, and will probably grow bored of this before long. But I have often wondered what my hair would look like dyed jet black under a trucker cap… |

And Word Gets Around IS a great album. Shame about everything since.
