| With The Futureheads and Maximo Park spearheading a Mackem revolution, should the unsuspecting public now open their arms in anticipation of a riotous wave of Bright Young Things storming out of Sunderland? Now consider a second conundrum. After proving its keen ear for originality with the splendid Go! Team releases last year, has indie label Memphis Industries cemented its place as Bastion Of All Things Excellent by championing new North East pets Field Music? |

Frankly, no. If this debut single is anything to go by I predict scene-orientated overkill quicker than you can say Dominic Masters. Made up of brothers Peter and David Brewis, along with Andrew Moore, Field Music seem to work around the thesis of ‘less is more’. During the two minutes of ‘Shorter Shorter’ not a lot happens. Vocals are supplied in an annoyingly high pitch throughout the entirety of a song that breaks down more times than Whitney Houston. The string arrangement is probably the most reputable aspect of a track that reminds me of a more camp ‘It Must Be Love’ by Madness.
‘Trying To Sit Out’ tricks us into expecting Beach Boys harmonies, but instead a fairly effective use of the violin can again be found. Once more the track is minimalist at less than two minutes of acoustic guitar and throwaway lyrics ("I wait until the morning, get up early and make you breakfast"), combining to make an entirely forgettable track that my computer tells me I have heard eight times.
If Field Music can offer better then somebody should be shot for releasing this first. Shorter Shorter? Even the title is a cry for help. |
