If you call your band ‘Imperial Vipers’, there are only so many non-ironic ways that you can realistically aim to take your music. And let’s face it, having never heard the name before you could safely assume that they were either a) an unruly gang of bikers that got no respect for nothin’ or nobody, or b) an unruly gang of hair metal rockers that got no respect for nothin’ or nobody… except, of course, the gods of rock.

And indeed, as their very own biography states (apply own deep, mystical voice over): “The band is united musically by one bond – straight up rock and roll”.

Music has, on the whole, moved on from the likes of Guns N Roses and Soundgarden. Which makes the arrival of ‘Promised Land’ by Imperial Vipers such an unexpected entity. Lyrics such as “shoot ‘em through the knees” and “hang ‘em from the trees” charm and delight the musical palette. And they come accompanied by a riff so heavy you can’t help but wonder how they managed to lift it all the way from 1992.

Obviously, my thinly veiled sarcasm isn’t big, or indeed, particularly clever. But then again, neither is regurgitating a musical genre we thought we had seen the last of. There is no doubting that Imperial Vipers are deadly serious in what they do, but that makes ‘Promised Land’ all the more worrying. At least with Towers Of London, you kind of felt deep down that it was some kind of elaborate joke.
