When first taking note of Neil’s Children, you may have found it difficult to shrug off the whole notion of having too much of a good thing. But if you are anything like me, a quick rethink may lead you to hastily drop the ‘good’ section of that sentence in return for something much more uncomplimentary.

You may also have read interviews where the band professed to hating fashion and people that are too image conscious. Accompanying one of these interviews is a shot of the three members, complete with eye make-up, peroxide assisted hair and safety pins randomly strewn across their clothes. Is this not the same sort of look found in any Topman up and down the land? Yeah dude, that’s like, so sticking it to the man. It was easy to initially detest this band, largely for their seemingly contradictory attitudes and also because London had become so over saturated with three chord ‘punk’ bands that it was almost a chore to listen to some of them.

And while you cannot deny it is foolish to judge a band before hearing much of their stuff, further inspection of last year’s initially fairly well-received mini-album Change/Return/Success showed it wasn’t actually particularly significant.

New single ‘Always The Same’ isn’t quite as adverse to progression as the title suggests, seeing the band become less angular and slightly more, dare I say, tuneful. But let’s not get carried away, as the song ultimately shows a less-than-average band reaching the dizzy heights of being average. Unfortunately for Neil’s Children, it doesn’t look like even Alan McGhee’s Poptones will be able to craft any longevity out of these angry punk upstarts.
