| Another single from Dr Octo. Last time it was aliens, now it's trees. But there's still the abominable dnb remix. |

Kool Keith (Doctor Octagon) has never been firmly wedded to the mainstream and here he moves further away from even his unusual brand of hip hop. But I'm beginning to be uncertain as to whether it works, or instead detracts from his surreal lyrical skills.
Dr Octo's team of producers for this track (One Watt Sun) have opted for something in between your average unadulterated hip hop boomer and the broken skittering vocal fragmentation of artists like Prefuse 73 and Machine Drum. Spastic synths bounce around Dr Octagon's frankly weird spiel on environmentalism, which is in turn carefully fragmented in a way that recalls the early days of sampling - i.e., somewhat immature, something of a throwback.
There are a few other slightly throwaway tracks (such as the dnb pain), but the main content here is the curious play between Octo and One Watt Sun. Indeed, the partnership here has certainly created a unique sound. But I'm not quite sure whether it always works. |
