Verb T and Harry Love
- 'Delusion'
(Silent Soundz)
|

| There are perhaps three things that really drive the musical component of hip hop: good production, good rhymes and good interplay. The golden hip hop record has these three in perfect harmonious combination, like a carefully maintained equilibrium. The slightest deficit in even only one of these can break the motion, and thus I think it is usually quite hard to achieve mediocrity within hip hop. |

Delusion isn't a bad kind of mediocre. It's more of a good kind of mediocre; a kind of average, pulling-no-punches set of tunes that you can kick around on your hi-fi for a while and then place in the CD rack to collect dust. Harry Love of Scratch Perverts drops Verb T into a thick organic mixture of sound on 'Delusion', all orchestral with a rich echo. The second track, 'Make It Hott' (sic) features a coffee-coloured double bass riff that supports Verb's best lyrical offering of the three tracks. He deftly flicks through rhyme schemes, making up for the rather straightforward approach on 'Delusion' and the decidedly slower and less inspiring final track, 'Hypnotizm'.
Verb T has a deeply listenable-to voice, competent flow and largely interesting sense of wordplay. Harry Love has a languorous and polished style; not particularly musically adventurous, but enjoyable nevertheless. But together they somehow don't quite manage to jump out as more than mediocre. It's a musical tragedy. |
