| When this CD arrived through my letter box I thought, "Bloody hell, I can't believe I have to review something by that bloke who writes those depressing bitter-sweet love songs for Anglo-American romantic dramas, he's boring." Luckily I'd confused Johnathan Rice for Damien Rice and was mildly happy that I wouldn't have to spend an evening pressing 'Shift' and 'F7' looking for fancy words to liven up a dull review. |

Johnathan Rice, if you haven't heard of him already via GQ and some high profile support slots (I hadn't), is a singer/songwriter and isn't Damien Rice. He's very up and coming according to several websites and rightly so if 'So Sweet' is anything to go by. It's a satisfyingly muscular song (without being Rock) that makes the most of Johnathan's smooth/rough voice (yes I know that's an oxymoron but that's how it sounds to me). Two parts of the single particularly appeal to me: the intro, as it sounds like Orbital, and the chorus of "la la la la, la la la la la" - which as history proves is always the most successful of choruses. But to me the best thing about 'So Sweet' is that it was used on The OC. Three cheers for vacuous American teen soaps.
Johnathan "Why do some people get all the talent?" Rice also appears in the upcoming Johnny Cash biopic, Walk The Line, which should propel him further into the limelight and make the visibility of this single in your record collection all the more credible. |
