According to Mr Ant, “to Jut” is to strut around one’s flat smashing household objects as a result of being inspired, bored, frustrated, happy, angry or mentally devastated. This précis gives a useful clue as to what ¡This Is Jut! aspires to and contains.

Unusually, the promotional material accompanying this CD is accurate in its comparison of Snap Ant with his musical peers. Some sonic similarities with Gorillaz, Gorky’s, Clor, Super Furry Animals and Cornelius are arguably apt. However, just as ‘jutting’ is inspired by distinct emotions, this album is comprised of distinct types of music. This isn’t always a bad thing, but in this some of Snap’s songs (I like the name Snap, it reminds me of my seventh favourite song, ‘Rhythm Is A Dancer’), of a particular variety, are much better than others.

The first three tracks on the album are too Sesame Street-Pinball-Electro, while a few of the others sound like Twisted Nerve productions, but without the cute ‘monkey-on-a-keyboard’ keyboard and eerie ‘50s B-movie samples. However, when Snap Ant goes downtempo and simplifies things, as demonstrated on ‘Berewind’ and ‘Better One In the Hand Than Two In The Bush’, he achieves something much more listenable, likeable and durable (I was going to use “long lasting” in that description to keep up my high rate of alliteration until I realised it sounded like a battery advert).

Being a label-mate of Ladytron, I expected the Snap Ant sound to be cooler and more aloof, but the “organic” undercurrent and regular synthed voices means this album errs on the side of quirky. I know this artist is unlikely to heed the advice of a nobody, but maybe for the next album Snap could avoid his electro urges and concentrate on his more natural elements: maybe that way we can get a credible singer/songwriter to replace that muppet Blunt.

On reading that last paragraph back I realised that I’m publicly asking for more middle-of-the-road, sensitive metro-sexual troubadours! God, I’m getting old.

Rhythm Is A Dancer? Have you only listened to seven songs?

I've listened to eight. The eighth being "Breakfast At Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something which, as I'm sure most people would agree, is not as good as "Rhythm Is A Dancer"(?) :-)
