Butterflies of Love
- Famous Problems
(Fortuna Pop!)
| Been-around-a-while indie poppers The Butterflies of Love may be about as fashionable these days as getting lightning bolts shaved in the back of your head, but anyone prepared to say a cruel word about them must surely have a heart of stone. They’re just too cute. |

Famous Problems, the Butterflies’ third record in 10 years, is a charming collection of understated, ramshackle guitar pop that smells so strongly of ‘floppy lo-fi’ it may as well be wearing a cardigan and making its friends home-made birthday cards. There will be no rocking out under this roof, young man. We’ve got some serious mumbling to do.
But the Butterflies of Love can mumble with the best of them, and Famous Problems is virtually a masterclass in effortless guitar pop with brains. It’s not a perfect album - a few tracks are so understated you’ll be reaching for the defibrillator - but for lazy Sunday afternoon listening, it’s right on the money. It’s also rich in subtle invention, with shades of psychedelia and garage rock just bubbling under the surface.
That said, there’s still a sense that for all its charms, the band isn’t quite hitting its stride. The strongest evidence of this is recent single ‘Orbit Around You’, which benefits hugely from some pace and a bit of breezy melody and shows the rest of the album up a little. An album full of tracks like that would be an undeniable classic. As it is, Famous Problems is a pleasant listen from a quality band destined to remain firmly under the radar. |
