| At last, it seems, I’ve found a solution to writing these tricky gig reviews. You just leave it so long that you can barely remember anything at all, and just spew up any remaining chunks of digested gig onto the page. The downside is that by letting it digest so long you end up spewing up shit. |

Three bands play, the first being from Manchester and called Keith. They have obviously spent more time thinking about their music than their band name, and boast subtle traces of Manchester ancestors like the Fall and Joy Division, despite being a very jangly guitar pop band. They are earnest, talented and intelligent, and I think they are very good.
Clor are the stars of the evening. They may have a few years under their belt but they exude the sparkling energy of a brand new band. Their effeminate electrolysed pop music sometimes reminds of Pulp, the Faint, Soulwax and the Pet Shop Boys, but also has the jerky energy of current big guitar cheeses Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand and the Futureheads. They write unashamed pop songs – though a couple are a little too deliberately chart-minded for my generally sour tastes.
Tom Vek. This is where I really start to run out of words. Despite the eponymous frontman’s boyish charm, his band are clumsy and devoid of character, like an Electric Six who aren’t actually taking the piss. If the Social wasn’t so horribly crammed I would consider staying to the end, and maybe if I did I would have a bit more to say. But that place really, really sucks as a venue so about half way through I fuck it off for my bus instead.
