Corrosion of Conformity / Clutch / Stinking Lizaveta
@ Nottingham Rock City

| Having gone through a scientific education, it is in my nature to observe patterns and trends in things I see. After going this to gig, I would like to propose a new theory – the beard/metal correlation. |
| |
It has long been established that facial hair and heavy guitar music have gone hand in hand, but there is no mention in the standard literature of a direct link between beard volume and musical greatness. I will therefore present evidence that demonstrates such a link.
The first support band tonight is Stinking Lizaveta, as unique a three-piece as you could wish to hear. Sporting a bassist (small beard) who uses an electric stand-up contraption, a worryingly hobo-like guitarist (beard the size of a small dog), and a hugely energetic female drummer (no beard), Stinking Lizaveta jam their way through a series of jazz-influenced instru-metal tracks in impressive fashion. They are later credited by CoC’s Pepper Keenan as being the future of rock, and on this evidence I am inclined to agree. SL’s latest LP is now at the top of my CDs-to-buy list. A beard volume / person ratio of 50ml/pp corresponds well with a highly entertaining performance. This could be improved by the addition of a female beard – get on those testosterone pills, love.
This is my third live experience of Clutch, and the first in the Main Hall of Rock City. Within seconds I realise why I keep coming back for more – these guys just rule. Cracking riffs, a great knack for making weird timings sound awesome and one of the most unique vocalists around. Speaking of whom, Neil Fallon takes the Golden Beard award for tonight – his veritable bush is large enough to house a small forest’s worth of woodland mammals. ‘Nuff respect. Highlights of the Clutch set are opener 'Promoter', 'Profits of Doom' (also from their latest LP Blast Tyrant), and a hugely riffed-up version of the funktastic 'Elephant Riders'. Boosted by Mr. Fallon's awe-inspiring effort, and four out of five band members having beards, Clutch score highly with a ratio of 60ml/pp.
It’s been a long time for fans of Corrosion of Conformity to wait – the last time they played in Nottingham was nine years ago with grunge-maestros Soundgarden. One of the few hair-metal bands that I’m glad we haven’t seen the back of, CoC put on a great performance for the tattooed legions before them. Fighting what seems like a never-ending stream of technical issues, Pepper Keenan leads his hairy minions through a stream of classic riffs and wailing solos. Most of the material comes from the band’s latest two albums America’s Volume Dealer and In The Arms Of God, which is a shame as I find them less consistently rocking than the classic Wiseblood. That said, 'Paranoid Opioid' and 'Stone Breaker' still totally rock live, and overall CoC deliver a solidly moshable set. Three out of a possible four beards also gives a decent ratio, but the lack of a bushy number means a fairly average ratio of 40ml of beard per person. Again, the beard ratio nicely reflects the music - good, but not the best of the night.
Conclusive proof, I think you’ll all agree, of two things: firstly, the more beard in a band, the better the rock; secondly, I really need to get out a bit more. Ah well.
