| Punk music started out as an angry rebellion against the oppression of conformity. Lately it seems to have turned into an ideal-less accompaniment to the "extreme sports" lifestyle. Luckily, Paint It Black are here, and they are very fucking angry. |

I used to be a big, big punk fan. Growing up, bands like Pennywise, NOFX, Dead Kennedys and Good Riddance provided me with huge inspiration, from both a personal and musical point of view.
But then something happened. The further I delved into the punk nap-sack, instead of finding new and interesting nuggets of tasty punk goodness, I began to find stinking morsels of dull homogeneity. The problem with the genre is the seeming lack of scope for new ideas. My interest in punk began to wane in favour of other genres.
Having stepped back, punk slowly became a good thing again. If you ignore the derivative shite that plagues punk, the true golden nuggets begin to shine again. Refused and AFI are two such nuggets of recent years, and Paint It Black are another.
Paint It Black take the old-school hardcore sensibilities of Minor Threat, the anger of Black Flag, the face-melting speed of Pennywise and mash it up into a series of sub-two minute wonders. The resulting music punches you repeatedly in the face with inventive riffs (with more than three chords – hurrah!), kicks you in the arse with some amazingly skilful drum playing, and finishes off by gruffly shouting in your face that your parents weren’t married when you were conceived.
If your taste in punk stretches only as far as Blink 182 and Sum 41, then you will find yourself on the floor, bleeding and crying for your mummy. If, on the other hand, you appreciate what punk is really about, you’ll be jumping to your feet begging for more. This is punk how it should be done – loud, fast, angry and short. Probably with an "extremely" before each of those adjectives. Now, I need something to go and smash up……. |
